چکیده

Introduction: Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are responsible for initiating the process of carcinogenesis by enabling self-renewal and self-proliferation cancer cells. This study aimed to investigate presence epithelial with characteristics (ALDH+) in early stages oral precancerous lesions (Oral Leukoplakias) frequency these different squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs). Materials & methods: The aim this was detection immunohistochemical pattern expression CSC protein-biomarker ALDH1&2 (sc-166362, Santa Cruz Co, Dallas, Texas, USA) paraffin-embedded samples 30 cases leukoplakia all degrees dysplasia 21 (OSCC) differentiation compared histologically normal epithelium. were retrieved from 2009-2019 archives Department Oral Medicine/Pathology, School Dentistry, Aristotle University Thessaloniki, Greece. evaluated through a three-tier scale (positive Ι: 6-35%, ΙΙ: 36-70%, ΙΙΙ: 71-100%). Statistical analysis performed SPSS Pearson Chi-square, significance level set at 0.05 (p=0.05). Results: staining observed mildly membrane stratum spinosum epithelium basale epithelium, characteristically interface point basal membrane. expressed significantly more OSCC than (p-value=0.0001) (p-value=0.0001). Mainly, severely moderately dysplastic non-dysplastic (p-value=0.001). Discussion: characteristic ALDH potentially malignant suggests CSCs their possible implication tumorigenesis, even stage leukoplakia.

The Cancer Stem Cell Hypothesis in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A New Target for the Treatment

Within a single tumor clone, cells have significantly different abilities to proliferate and form new tumors. This has led to the hypothesis that most cells in a cancer have a limited ability to divide and only a small subset of distinct cells, the cancer stem cells (CSCs), has the capacity to self-renew and form new tumors . It has been proposed that the development of tumors is based exclusiv...

Langerhans cells and T cells sense cell dysplasia in oral leukoplakias and oral squamous cell carcinomas--evidence for immunosurveillance.

Leukoplakias (LPLs) are lesions in the oral mucosa that may develop into oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The objective of this study was to assess presence and distribution of dendritic Langerhans cells (LCs) and T cells in patients with LPLs with or without cell dysplasia and in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Biopsy specimens from patients with leukoplakias (LPLs) with or without dy...

Comparative evaluation of the frequency of myofibroblasts between oral and cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas

Introduction: Differentiation of fibroblasts to myofibroblasts is an initial and very important event in tumor genesis. Myofibroblasts produce proteinases that stimulate invasion in cancers. Due to the more malignant potential of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) compared to cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) , the aim of the present study was to compare myofibroblasts between OSCC and ...

Cancer stem cells and stemness markers in oral squamous cell carcinomas.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is one of the world top ten most common cancers with its highest occurrence in the Indian subcontinent and different aggressive and etiological behavioural patterns. The scenario is only getting worst with the 5 year survival rates dropping to 50%, persistent treatment failures and frequent cases of relapse/recurrence. One of the major reasons for t...
